HIPAA
HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. QHM is committed to quality services and also ensures accordance with the policies and procedures of HIPAA. HIPAA regulations apply to entities that are considered covered entities.
The following are defined as “covered entities":
Healthcare providers, Health Plans, and Healthcare clearinghouse.
Under this definition, some QHM clients should comply with HIPAA regulations, however, HIPAA was created for the United States and not for International carriers. Under HIPAA guidelines, a plan must provide individuals a notice of the privacy practices in connection with the plan, and must provide individuals with access to their records, the right to request changes and the right to receive an accounting of past non routine disclosures.
Since QHM is a TPA, we are considered a non-covered entity for purposes of HIPAA. Although QHM is not required under the definition of HIPAA to comply with these regulations, in an effort to maintain quality services, QHM has implemented some standards from the guidelines for transmitting, utilizing, disclosing and safeguarding the confidential medical information that QHM creates, receives or maintains on behalf of our clients.
